A Guide to Planning a Relaxed Barn Wedding in Nottinghamshire or the Midlands

There’s just something about a barn wedding that feels different, isn’t there? Maybe it’s the warm glow of fairy lights against old beams, the sound of everyone laughing around fire pits with a drink in hand, or the fact that barn weddings naturally encourage people to slow down a little and actually be present.

As a wedding photographer covering Nottinghamshire and the Midlands, relaxed wedding days will always have my heart. The kind where couples aren’t worrying about perfection or sticking rigidly to timelines every second of the day. The kind where the focus is on joy, good food, hugs from your favourite people, dancing badly with your best mates, and actually soaking it all in together.

And honestly? The Midlands is full of incredible barn wedding venues that make this kind of wedding feel effortless.

Here is a guide to planning a relaxed barn wedding in Nottinghamshire or the Midlands!

Start With a Venue That Matches the Feeling You WanT

One of the biggest things that shapes the atmosphere of your relaxed barn wedding in Nottinghamshire or the Midlands is your venue. If you want a relaxed day, choose somewhere that already feels warm and welcoming rather than somewhere you feel like you need to β€œperform” in.

Barn venues are brilliant for this because they naturally create a cosy, sociable atmosphere. Guests tend to settle in quickly, conversations flow easily, and the whole day feels less formal in the best possible way.

Here are some of my favourite barn wedding venues in Nottinghamshire and around the Midlands that absolutely nail that relaxed-but-beautiful vibe.

Hazel Gap Barn

Hazel Gap Barn is one of those venues that somehow manages to feel both luxurious and relaxed at the same time.

Tucked away on the Welbeck Estate in Nottinghamshire, the red-brick barn has this incredible warm atmosphere with giant fireplaces, candlelight, fairy lights, and beautiful rustic details throughout. The courtyard area is especially lovely for relaxed evenings around the fire pits with guests chatting away under the lights.

The venue works brilliantly for couples who want a slightly elevated relaxed barn wedding in Nottinghamshire without losing that cosy, family-focused feel. Everything flows really naturally here too, which makes such a difference to the overall atmosphere of the day.

Also, the food here deserves a mention because the in-house flame-grilled and rotisserie menus are so good. I genuinely think about the rotisserie chicken and crushed new potatoes daily!

Perfect for couples who want:

  • A romantic countryside setting

  • Indoor and outdoor social spaces

  • Amazing food experiences

  • A cosy but stylish atmosphere

Shustoke Farm Barns

If your dream for a relaxed barn wedding in the Midlands includes incredible food, candlelight, and a packed dance floor, Shustoke Barn is honestly such a good choice.

The barn itself is stunning with huge oak beams, flagstone floors, soft lighting, and a beautiful courtyard with olive trees and fire pits. It feels rustic in a really modern, intentional way.

One thing I absolutely love about Shustoke is how interactive the food experience is. Guests can watch chefs cooking over open flames, pizzas being made, and rotisserie feasts being prepared right in front of them. It creates such a sociable atmosphere and gets everyone mingling naturally.

And from a photography point of view? Candlelit ceremonies in this space are just chef’s kiss.

This venue is ideal for couples who:

  • Want a really social, lively atmosphere

  • Care a lot about food and guest experience

  • Love warm, cosy lighting

  • Want a brilliant evening party

Foxtail BarnS

Foxtail Barns feels like a little hidden countryside escape.

Set within 70 acres of woodland, lakes, and wildflowers, it’s perfect for couples wanting a relaxed wedding that still feels beautifully stylish. The Orangery ceremony space is light-filled and airy while still keeping that cosy barn atmosphere.

I especially love how much thought has gone into making the whole experience feel easy and enjoyable for couples and guests alike. From the getting-ready suites to the accommodation lodges on-site, everything is designed to help people settle in and enjoy the relaxed barn wedding in the Midlands properly.

This venue works so well for:

  • Weekend wedding vibes

  • Nature-loving couples

  • Relaxed outdoor drinks receptions

  • Couples wanting everything in one place

Lapstone Barn

Lapstone Barn is absolutely gorgeous if you love classic Cotswolds charm.

The 18th-century stone barn sits on a peaceful hill with beautiful countryside views and feels incredibly calm and spacious. One thing I think couples really appreciate here is how relaxed the morning can be. The bridal party gets access from 10am, meaning there’s no stressful rushing around trying to arrive on time.

The outdoor spaces are also perfect for a relaxed wedding day with lawn games, drinks in the sunshine, guests chatting around the fire pit later in the evening… it all feels very effortless and joyful.

And honestly, venues that allow your guests to properly slow down and enjoy themselves always create the best atmosphere.

Old Gore Barn

Old Gore Barn is SUCH a fun choice for couples who want their relaxed barn wedding to feel like one big celebration.

The whole venue has this modern rustic feel with exposed beams, huge airy spaces, outdoor fire pits, and a really relaxed approach to food. Think street food, tacos, pizzas, churros, gelato, bao buns… basically the dream. Their food is cooked over an open fire, and the pizzas, tacos, bao buns and burgers are more evening centred!

I always think relaxed weddings work best when guests feel comfortable, and food plays such a huge role in that. Sharing food, grazing tables, casual evening snacks… it all helps people loosen up and enjoy themselves.

Old Gore Barn feels especially perfect for couples who care more about atmosphere and experience than tradition for tradition’s sake.

Tips for Planning a Relaxed Barn Wedding

Don’t Overfill Your TimelinE

One of the quickest ways to create stress on a wedding day is cramming too much into it. Leave breathing room between parts of the day. Give yourselves time to actually chat to guests, have a drink together, and soak everything in. Some of the most joyful moments happen in the in-between bits.

Prioritise Guest ExperiencE

Relaxed barn weddings in Nottinghamshire or the Midlands are usually the ones where guests feel comfortable and included. Think cosy seating areas, great food, easy-flowing drinks receptions, outdoor games, late-night snacks, and plenty of spaces where people can properly connect.

Choose Suppliers You Feel Comfortable Around

This is SUCH a big one.

You spend most of your wedding day with your suppliers around you, so choose people who make you feel calm and at ease. Especially your photographer.

A lot of my couples tell me they’re awkward in front of the camera (honestly, same), and that’s completely okay. You do not need to suddenly become professional models on your wedding day. The best photos almost always come from moments where you’re relaxed, laughing together, and genuinely enjoying yourselves.

Build Your Day Around What Actually Matters to You

Your relaxed barn wedding in Nottinghamshire or the Midlands doesn’t need to follow a strict formula.

If you care more about having a huge dance floor than perfectly styled details then lean into that. If you want a relaxed sharing feast instead of a formal meal, do it. If you’d rather spend golden hour with your favourite people than disappear for more portraits, that’s completely valid too.

The most meaningful weddings are the ones that actually reflect the couple.

Embrace the Joy

I know I say the word joy a lot, but honestly… that’s what I remember most from weddings.

The loud laughs during speeches. Your grandparents holding hands during the ceremony. Your mates screaming lyrics on the dance floor. That quiet moment together just after the ceremony where it suddenly hits you that you’re married.

That’s the good stuff.

And relaxed barn weddings in Nottinghamshire or the Midlands? They create the perfect atmosphere for those moments to happen naturally.
